The Importance of Discipline

in an Organization

Behavioral problems in the workplace call for supervisors to take action to ensure that the problem is contained and remedied. The importance of discipline in the organization cannot be underestimated, since employee morale, productivity and even company profitability can be adversely affected. A positive approach may resolve a problem before it worsens; however, discipline should be used carefully by following company policy while respecting the worker’s rights.

Important disciplinary actions to consider in the workplace

Self-discipline – Previous to the verbal warning

– Explain what is expected

– Keep him/her informed about plans, changes, procedures

– Explain consequences to other co-workers and the company

– Offer the opportunity that she/he self-correct

Verbal – Corrective discipline

– Get information on the problem, ask and listen 

– Explain the polices and rules and what is expected from him /her

– Explain possible consequences for insubordination: writing warning, probation or termination

– Try to agree on the solution and make a plan of action, set  goals

– Any verbal warning should be documented with all details and included in his/her file

– Make a formal warning (in writing) including:

• The specific problem

• Dates

• Effects of the problem on: other employees and the company

• Steps taken so far to correct the problem

• Should indicate if a writing warning, probation, or possible termination may result if the problem is not resolved.

• The employee’s signature, or note explaining that she/he did not want to sign it

– Decide on possible disciplinary actions:

• Place in probation for a specific period of time

• Transfer the person to another department

• Demote him/her

• Send him/her home without pay for a few days

• Involuntary termination

What to do during a conflict in the company

· Give thanks to the people for bringing their situation with you

· Show empathy and genuine concern on the problem

· Offer your help to resolve the conflict

· Take some responsibility (depends on the situation)

· Collect information and get to the bottom of the problem

· Repeat what they are saying, by listening to what they said might help both sides (sometimes could be a misunderstanding or a communication problem)

· Shows that you really care about them (People with the conflict)

· Take an attitude of “let’s solve the problem together”
