THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE SUPERVISOR ARE:

When I ask the group in a training session, what will be the characteristics of an effective supervisor, that they will like to see in case they were to hire a supervisor, they came with this large list. Sometimes they even ask that that person dress well, is good-looking, always smile, among others.

What will you add or remove from this list?

 

  • Knows how to communicate
  • Knows how to listen and observe
  • Is a good leader: guides & motivates
  • Is a team-player
  • Is result-oriented
  • Keeps focused on the goals
  • Improvises and has initiative
  • Is organized and versatile
  • Is creative
  • Is a good mediator
  • Respects everybody
  • Is honest
  • Is sensitive to others’ needs
  • Makes decisions
  • Is a good negotiator
  • Knows legal aspects
  • Knows computers
  • Resolves conflicts
  • Controls her/his stress, aggression, and frustration
  • Is a good coach
  • Seeks help and support
  • Recognizes his/her mistakes

Once they finish writing this list, I give them a self-evaluation that includes most of these characteristics and I ask them to evaluate how they see themselves against this list. Many see that they are sometimes far from what it is an effective supervisor.
